Smaller than a single-bed mattress, a bunk is more like a futon than a bed. I manage to fit perfectly on it, so I don’t know how people taller than 5’5.5” sleep. We sleep in the hulls of Hikianalia and there’s a cloth you can hook to the ceiling so you don’t roll off of your bed when the sea is rough. Some people have a difficult time in the hulls of Hikianalia because the space is so small. The sleeping areas on Hōkūleʻa are more exposed to the environment and a canvas is what usually keeps you dry and separates you from the pola (deck of a canoe).
